Prayer List: 35,000 Murders in Chicago Since 1965

PBS reports, “From 1965 to Labor Day weekend this year, more than 35,100 people — roughly the population of Tupelo, Mississippi — were murdered in Chicago, according to Chicago Police Department records and the Chicago Tribune.” More than 500 people have been murdered in Chicago in 2016.

Another school year provides opportunities for student ministries. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, “Over 50 million students are heading off to approximately 98,300 public elementary and secondary schools for the fall 2016 term, and before the school year is out, an estimated $584 billion will be spent related to their education.”

The Local reports, “The death toll from a powerful earthquake in central Italy was revised downwards to 241 on Thursday but officials cautioned it could rise again as rescuers continued a grim search for corpses, as powerful aftershocks rocked the devastated area.”

Prayer List: 20,000 People Rescued in Louisiana Flooding

According to The Weather Channel, “The federal government declared a major disaster in Louisiana Sunday after torrential rain inundated the state killing at least six people, flooding thousands of homes and prompting thousands of water rescues.”

At a press conference Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards announced that 20,000 people have been rescued and shelters housed 10,000 people.

Southern Baptist disaster relief teams and individual churches have already started assisting in the recovery efforts.

The Daily Mirror reports, “A suicide bomber has killed at least 70 people as they gathered to mourn a murdered journalist in Pakistan. The devastating attack took place at a hospital in Quettain, in the violence-plagued southwestern province of Baluchistan.”

Health hazards abound at the 2016 Summer Olympics. The Boston Globe reports, “With up to half a million visitors set to descend on the city for the Games, keeping them healthy could be a big job. Officials are preparing to treat an estimated 20,000 people during the Games.”

Sex trafficking of young girls is also rampant along the BR-116 highway which passes near the Olympic village. According to The Daily Telegraph, “female children are sold for sex often by their own families” at the truck stops along the “Highway of Death”.

National Review reports that emperor worship could return to Japan because members of the Liberal Democratic Party achieved a two-thirds majority in the legislature and now have the votes necessary to amend the country’s constitution:

“The LDP’s draft for an amended constitution would eliminate the prohibition on imbuing religious organizations with ‘political authority,’ clearing the way for the return of state Shintoism and emperor worship.”
